Teddy Oakey is undergraduate student studying astrophysics at the University of Virginia. His primary realm of research regards massive star formation, but also leads the University of Virginia Occultation Group, which is an asteroid research group which investigates minor planets through the shadows they cast when passing in front of distant stars. These shadows can be predicted with great accuracy, and by deploying multiple telescopes over vast geographical regions one can reconstruct incredibly detailed maps of asteroid profiles, revealing mountains, canyons, and even moons. Teddy spends most of his evenings tinkering with telescopes in garages and fields to gather as much information as possible on the millions of asteroids and minor planets in the Solar System.
