Parallax, Serapis, Astro-Viewing Expectations
Three 15 Minute Sessions
Next CAS Meeting
Wednesday, February 4th at 7 pm
Leander McCormick Observatory -
Parallax (Rich Drumm) - What is parallax and the History of Parallax at the LMO
Serapis (Marshall Faintich) - Merging astrophotography imagery acquired from disparate sources
Astro-Viewing Expectations (Boris Starosta) - A comparison between digital imaging vs. the likely visual impression on various targets. This allows astronomy newcomers to adjust their expectations, introduce skills, and forestall disappointment at the eyepiece. We'll see image captures using the CAS image
intensifier, and a "sidebar" on using binoviewers to elevate visual observations. -
CVs:
Richard Drumm was an “observer” on the UVA Parallax Program in 1982/3 (with Boris Starosta). He worked as a travel agent and later as a TV news cameraman at WVIR-29. He was President of his own video production company NTSC - The New Television Services Company. He is currently the editor & producer of the 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast & the editor of Astronomy Cast Podcast.
Dr. Marshall Faintich is an astronomer by training, a cartographer by trade, and a student of ornithology, numismatics, archaeology, and history. Marshall received his BS in Applied Mathematics from the University of Missouri at Rolla (1968), and his MS (1969) and PhD (1971) in Astronomy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Boris Starosta was active in visual and photographic amateur astronomy from the mid-1970's to the mid-90's. During the Pandemic, he took up astronomy again, marveling at how digital and electro-optical technologies have revolutionized the field. Nonetheless, his favorite pastime remains sitting at and looking through the telescope with his bare eyes.
