March CAS Meeting

The Aurora

Presented by UVA Professor Phil Arras

March 4, 2020 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

The northern lights are among the most spectacular natural phenomena that can be seen with the naked eye. While they have been known throughout human history, with modern spacecraft and telescopes we have also observed them on other planets in our solar system, as well as on the sun and other stars. In this talk, I’ll review observations of aurorae and discuss our current understanding of the engine driving them, as well as how they produce different types of electromagnetic radiation.
